The Direct Action (formerly Events) Committee met today, 6/16 at 3:30 at the AIPER house. Minutes of the meeting are listed below, bolded are action items that need to be done. Please consider volunteering to take on one or more of the bolded items, email ksinema@cox.net if you can help.
We will be meeting next Sunday, June 23rd at 3:30 pm at the Friends Meeting House, 315 W. 15th St. in Tempe to continue planning the July 4th event. We will also be meeting on Sunday, June 30th at 3:30 pm at the AIPER house, 325 E. Broadway in Tempe to finish preparing for July 4th. For a summer/fall calendar outline, see the bottom of this email. Thanks! Kyrsten
1. Protest debriefing ideas and suggestions
We may want to consider having "shifts" or rotating turns protests or rallies in the hot weather so people can have turns resting We should always have community water available at hot protests/vigils/events
media should be called the day of the event and reminded, and called during the event when none of them show having a protest/event on a Friday afternoon may impact media attention
Janet Napolitano's press conference at the same time as the protest probably had a negative impact on coverage we should consider approaching governmental agencies such as the police and FBI before these events in groups, not alone, sothere are witnesses to the conversations we need non-violence training so that we can respond more assertively in the future and still be safe we need to develop some event guidelines that let participants know what our expectations are, ie. no weapons, no property destruction, respectful language, respect for diverse cultures, etc. We will work on this in our next meeting so that we can bring something to the main group for consensus. We need to have guidelines in place for th July 4th event.
2. July 4th Event
we decided several meetings ago to get a booth at the Tempe festival to celebrate July 4th at Tempe Beach park. Larry West volunteered to get us the booth. Stan will follow up with Larry. at the event, we will have a flyer that "Reclaims Patriotism" by educating people about the forefathers and mothers of our country who were great and outspoken dissidents. Their early writings, music, poetry, and actions depict a great respect for individualism, freedom of speech, and open and honest dissent. Please send info about early dissenters to ksinema@cox.net for compilation into a flyer. We will have volunteers wandering the park in Uncle Sam hats (Mitch is researching renting/buying/making these hats) with large sandwich boards quoting early dissenting patriots. Volunteer Uncle/Aunt Sams will be handing out flyers and talking to people. (Please send quotes from early dissenters to ksinema@cox.net. Thom and Sherry, are you up for making 6-8 more of the big signs?) We will need people to help assemble the signs again. We requested $200 from the organizing committee to pay for copies of the flyer we create, rental/purchase of Uncle Sam gear, and signs that we make. Stan, were we granted the money?
3. Direct Action Objectives generated at the strategic planning session
We're holding a non-violence training August 2-4 to help members be prepared for civil disobedience ( email rscotttoo@hotmail.com to sign up ) We agreed to stage the Shadw Project on August 6 and 9 to remember and mourn the loss of lives in Hiroshima nuclear attacks (more info to come) We'll resume weekly vigils in September -- we'll revisit our strategy of whether to rotate location, keep same place every week, or variations of above.
September 11 we'll have a candlelight vigil to mourn the loss of WTC victims
October 7th we'll stage a major event protesting war on the anniversary of the first day of bombing of Afghanistan We'll work on creating pre-emptive and emergency response capability to current events
4. Impending Invasion of Iraq
We're going to get a pledge of resistance that tells the gov't that we don't want them to invade Iraq, and if they do, we'll be out in the streets protesting. Scotty will research and find us a pledge of resistance. We'll offer it to other groups to get lots of people signing the pledge. We'll make signs in advance of the Iraq invasion and we're going to set a time and place to meet automatically the day that the Iraq invasion starts. We'll post this on the web site so that everyone knows in advance what to do the day we invade.
